Blwyddyn 2

Welcome to Year 2! Although we are part of the Foundation Phase, we are located within the Junior school building. We are very fortunate to have two classes and direct access to a large garden area, as well as a covered decking area which we can use all year round. Our second classroom is organised into areas that encourage independent play, such as creative and painting, construction and small world, and a writing and phonics area.

This year the class team consists of Mrs Donna Fitches (class teacher), Miss Lynne Adams and Miss Millie Sheehan, a Coleg Ceredigion student who works with us on a Tuesday and Wednesday. We strongly believe that children learn best through fun and practical activities that motivate children to always try their best. We work hard to make the children in our class feel supported, safe and most important, that they are happy.

In Year 2 we love learning! As part of the new curriculum for Wales we get to experience a wide range of activities that help us learn about the world in which we live and develop a sense of wonder. We try to follow the children’s interests as much as possible through Pupil Voice activities, but there are cross-cutting themes that we tend to follow every year. These topics include Marvellous Me!, Celebrations, The World in Which We Live, The Great Fire of London and Pirates! Children also enjoy learning about their own and other cultures through mini-topics about Diwali, The Chinese New Year and Welsh links such as Santes Dwynwen and Dewi Sant.

At Ysgol Llwyn yr Eos we use the White Rose Maths scheme to develop numerical and mathematical skills through fun and practical games and activities. We also place great emphasis on improving children’s phonological awareness which greatly improves their ability to read, write and spell words. We encourage children to read daily at home and to play educational games such as Spelling Shed and TTRockstars as much as possible to help develop both their numerical and literacy skills. Children are also able to log onto their own Hwb accounts and use platforms such as J2E to extend their digital competency and learning. Our PE session is every Tuesday and children thoroughly enjoy BMO sessions with Bryn every half-term.  Developing the children’s ability to speak in Welsh is also a priority in Year 2. We incorporate as much everyday Welsh as possible, and children love learning new words and sentence patterns that help develop their confidence in speaking to each other.

If you have any questions or concerns, Miss Adams is available to have a chat when she welcomes children at the Year 2 door in the mornings, or you can email me on FtchesD1@Hwbcymru.net
